Oscar E. "Butch" Bode III


Oscar E. "Butch" Bode III, 60, of Bandera, passed away Sunday, Jan. 6, in San Antonio. He was born in Brenham to Oscar Jr. and Doris Helmer Bode on August 2, 1952.
Butch married Linda Barnett on Nov. 1, 1992.
A gold card member of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA), he was well known in both the rodeo community and the horse industry. Butch trained horses and participated in rodeos throughout his life, riding cutting horses and participating in youth rodeos while in high school.
Interestingly, he was only the third left-handed calf roper to qualify for the National Finals Rodeo.
Butch also qualified numerous times for the Texas Circuit Finals in both roping and bulldogging, as well as qualifying in the bulldogging event the World Finals in 1996.
A loving husband, who loved his family and believed in God, Butch was crazy about his grandkids, who affectionately called him "PaPa."
He is survived by his wife, Linda Bode, of Bandera; mother-in-law Edith Barnett; daughter Sara Balcar and her husband, Eddie Castillo, of Bandera; sons, Oscar E. "Buster" Bode IV and his wife, Kristi, of Jarrell, and Bruce Bode of Milano; sisters, Brenda Klotz and her husband, Larry, of Montgomery, and Sharon Pennell of Bryan; and grandchildren, Bayle Bode, Oscar E. "Bryce" Bode V and Emily M. Castillo; as well as by with numerous nieces and nephews.
Butch was predeceased by his parents; sister Kathy Bode; and brother Bruce Brian Bode.
A visitation was held on Tuesday, Jan. 8, at Grimes Funeral Chapels in Bandera. A second visitation is scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 10, at Strickland Funeral Home in Caldwell. The funeral will be held at 2 pm, Friday, Jan. 11, in the chapel of Strickland Funeral Home.
