Phil Maurice Grothues

1941-2012

Phil Maurice Grothues, 70, of Kerrville, passed away on Wednesday, June 2, in San Antonio. He was born in San Antonio to Phil and Agnes Grothues on July 29, 1941.

Phil married Marlene Leibold on June 2, 1962, in Bandera.

He graduated from Central Catholic High School and earned a Bachelor's of Business from St. Mary's University in San Antonio. After graduating, He was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the United States Army and served as an artillery officer in the First Armored Division.

Phil was a well-known businessman in Kerrville, Uvalde and San Antonio. In 1970, he opened his first business, Lumbermart, in Uvalde. His other businesses included a second Lumbermart in Kerrville, Lifestyle Homes and Lake Medina RV Resort.

Named Texas Small Businessman of the Year, Phil served on the boards of directors for Lumberman's Association of Texas, Handy Hardware and First National Bank of Uvalde. He also served on the Notre Dame Church Finance and Building committees and the Notre Dame School Board He was an active member of the ACTS Core Team.

Phil was also a member of the Kerrville and Uvalde Knights of Columbus, Rotary Club. Additionally, he served as Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus in Uvalde.

Phil is survived by his wife, Marlene Grothues; mother Agnes Grothues; sons, Greg Grothues and his wife, Gina, of Lakehills, and Brian Grothues of Austin; daughters Debbie Grothues of Kerrville; Carol Whilden and her husband, Robert, of Houston; and Laura Stewart and her husband, Ed, of Silver Spring, Maryland; brother Mark Grothues and his wife, Carmen; sisters, Elaine Sachey and her husband, Tom, and Susan Simmons; and grandchildren, Kristen and Cole Grothues, Kendon and Kirkland Connally and Ally and Lindsey Whilden, as well as by nieces and nephews.

Phil was predeceased by his father, Phil A. Grothues.

A Mass of the Resurrection was held Tuesday, June 5, at Notre Dame Catholic Church, officiated by Monsignor Michael Boulette. Burial followed at the Garden of Memories Cemetery in Kerrville.

Pallbearers included Rothe Cox, Gene VanDeWalle, Charlie Downs, Mark Stone, Andy Mein and Tom Sachey.
