‘Cowboy Capital’ cutting horse advances to AQHA World Show

“Wild Conversion” – aka “Boon” – owned by Tim and Carla Brady of Pipe Creek will compete in the Junior Cutting event at the American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) World Show in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Nov. 6 through Nov. 21.

The Junior Cutting event is for horses five years old and younger. The Bradys purchased 4-year-old Boon at the Quarter Horse Select Sale at the San Antonio Livestock Show and Rodeo in February.

After studying the sale catalog and researching pedigrees and cutting show records, Tim Brady realized as soon as he spotted the horse, that Boon was something special.

“When he walked up that ramp and through that big garage door with his trainer on his back, he didn’t blink an eye. Then he started performing in front of the crowd with all the noise and commotion associated with a big auction,” Brady recalled, adding, “I knew he was a good-minded horse in addition to being very well built and nice looking.”

After spending two weeks at home riding Boon and assessing his training, the Bradys transported him to Danny Moore of Moore Quarter Horses in Spring Branch. Since Boon had been so well started by his previous owner-trainer, Moore put the talented cutting horse on cows immediately.

It didn’t take long before Boon found himself at his first show in June at the San Antonio Rose Palace in Kendall County. He competed in the Junior Cutting Class at the Guadalupe Valley Quarter Horse Breeders Association Show, sanctioned by the AQHA.

After competing under the watchful eyes of four judges during the event, Boon earned a second place, two fourth places and a fifth place, giving him the necessary four and one half AQHA points to advance to the World Show.

Understatedly, Moore described the fact that the young horse had placed so well and qualified for the World Show at his first show as “quite uncommon.”

Following this “uncommon” achievement, Brady and Moore took Boon to the Alamo Quarter Horse Breeders Association Show held the end of July, also at the San Antonio Rose Palace. The horse again competed in Junior Cutting Class under four different judges, receiving a third place, fourth place, sixth place and eighth place.

For his achievement, Boon was given the “Circuit Champion” award for placing all four days, as well as for placing higher than all other horses in the Junior Cutting event during the four-day competition. In addition, Boon acquired another AQHA point, giving him a total of six points from two shows.

Future plans for Boon – in addition to the World Show – include competing in more cutting events in AQHA-sanctioned competitions as well as with the National Cutting Horse Association (NCHA).

For now, Moore is riding Boon, but the Bradys plan to show him themselves at future cutting competitions.
