BEC offers 10 scholarships

Special to the Courier

Bandera Electric Cooperative (BEC) will award ten $1,000 scholarships to area high school seniors and currently enrolled post-secondary education students for use during the 2012-2013 school year. Applicants can apply in one of two categories: the traditional scholarship or the lineman scholarship.
Traditional scholarships are for students qualified to attend an accredited 4-year university/college, junior college or TEA-approved trade school. The lineman scholarship is for students qualified to attend an approved lineman training program. Individuals who are interested in applying for either scholarship should visit www.banderaelectric.com/youthprograms to view additional eligibility information and download an application.
Recipients will be chosen based on financial need, community and school involvement and the strength of an essay. Applicants must be an active member (or dependent of an active member) of BEC whose primary residence is served by BEC. All entries must be received by 5 pm on March 30. Winners will be announced in May.
The scholarship program was established in 1998 by BEC to encourage the educational pursuits of its members and their immediate families. Since then, the cooperative has awarded $140,000 in scholarships to members and their dependents.
Texas House Bill 3203, which was passed in September 1997, permits nonprofit electric cooperatives to retain unclaimed capital credit payments for scholarships. The number of scholarships and the amount awarded could vary annually, based on the unclaimed capital credit payments for that year.
