Accidental death occurs at Medina Children’s Home

By Judith Pannebaker

A death of a 1-month-old infant occurred at the Medina Children’s Home on Highway 16 North on Monday, Jan. 18, according to Bandera County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Richard Smith.

“We’re continuing an investigation into the baby’s death pending an autopsy; however, at this time, the death looks to be accidental,” he said in an interview.

Smith said preliminary information indicated that the infant, which had been sleeping in bed with her mother, had apparently suffocated.

“An emergency call that came in at 10:27 am reported that an infant was not breathing,” he said. When the Medina EMS arrived, Smith said personnel at the children’s home were administering CPR to the infant. EMS medics took over the procedure.

However, shortly after EMS arrived, a standby AirLife helicopter was cancelled. The infant was transported to Boerne Methodist where a physician pronounced her dead on arrival.

The baby’s mother, a resident of Kerrville, also has a 3-year-old toddler.
