Diabetes management seminars

The Hill Country Memorial Wellness Center will host two more “Be Well with Diabetes” seminars in May for individuals with diabetes.
“If you have diabetes, educating yourself through these seminars is vital to your health,” said Kim Thornton, a certified diabetes educator.
Thornton also emphasized that Medicare health insurance covers the cost of the Be Well with Diabetes seminars if attendees have been diagnosed with diabetes and have received an order from their physician for the seminars.
Additionally, Medicare covers up to three hours of one–on–one nutritional counseling with a registered dietitian like Thornton and two hours of diabetes education counseling with a nurse like the HCM Wellness Center’s Nanette Tisdale, R.N., who also teaches a Be Well with Diabetes seminar.
On Thursday, May 11 from 1-4 pm. Tisdale will present “Self-Care Management of Diabetes.” Attendees will learn strategies for preventing and managing the long-term complications of diabetes and will develop a personal self-care plan.
On Thursday, May 18 from 9-11 am. Thornton will present “Shopping and Cooking Meals for Good Diabetes Control.” Attendees will learn how to select and prepare diabetic-friendly food. A recipe booklet is provided, and the seminar does not require attendees to cook in the class.
“We can help you understand what classes and counseling your health insurance covers,” said Thornton. “With the right knowledge, you can manage diabetes and continue to live your life to the fullest,”
Space is limited, and registration is required. Spouses and caregivers may attend at no charge. The cost of the seminars is covered by most insurance plans and by Medicare. A physician’s order is required for insurance coverage, aand the HCM Wellness Center staff will help prospective attendees obtain an order if needed.
All seminars will be held in the HCM Wellness Center conference room at 1006 South State Highway 16 in Fredericksburg.
