Utopia 51st Annual Fall Fair

Special to the Courier

The craftwork of Utopia’s own artisan, Barbara Hausman will be featured during this years Utopia Arts & Crafts Fall Fair on Nov. 5 from 9 am to 4 pm. Barbara, along with over 60 local artisans, will have arts and crafts on display and available for purchase during the event. The Fair is held on the Utopia Town Square on the main Street through town, Highway 187. It promises to be a day of shopping fun, festivities and live music by Josh Murley of the Voice. A BBQ lunch will be held as a fundraiser and we’re expecting an appearance by Bad Boy Corvettes.
Barbara’s glasswork is a blend of uniqueness and beauty. If you ask Barbara if she’s an artist or a craftsman, she’ll tell you she’s a “good tool user”. She recalls that at the age of five she was presented with a blank canvas to paint and remembers being panic stricken because nothing came to mind. Today she says she still panics when faced with a blank canvas, but has enjoyed painting on a host of different canvases – clothing, glass, walls and even toilet seats!
Barbara started working with glass after watching an episode of America’s Artisans. This particular show featured a gentleman making glass vessel sinks. She told herself, “I can do that”, and indeed she did! Barbara has painted murals on hotel walls and in churches. She admits to starting out painting by seeing the bubbles in her husband’s beer and drawing it. Not only does she paint and make glass sinks, she also makes beads (in one of her 3 kilns) and wooden pens. She and her husband, Ralph, is quire a team. Ralph does scrimshaw & woodturning and Barbara adds design through pyrography and paint.
Barbara’s family moved to Utopia when she was six years old where she attended and graduated from Utopia High School. Her father, Lowell Tubbs, was her superintendent/teacher. Her mother, Janie, also taught her in school. After graduation, she attended and graduated from Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos, where she met her husband, Ralph Hausman.
In addition to being a mother of two, a wife and an artist, Barbara managed to include a career as the Director of Laboratory Medicine for Valley Memorial Hospital in Harlingen.
Experience Barbara’s unique art while on display in the gazebo at the Utopia Town Square during the Fall Fair Nov. 5.
