TVMDL info re CWD specimen shipping

Public Announcement

Administrative veterinarians with the Texas Animal Health Commission recently received information from the Texas A&M Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory (TVMDL), regarding the detection of Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) prions in cervids.
According to information, after receiving requests, TVMDL staff assembled a CWD specimen shipping box to enable producers to ship fixed tissue in a container compliant with International Air Transport Association (IATA) shipping requirements of hazardous material with formalin.
A small TVMDL shipping box will contain two 120cc formalin jars, a 95 KVP bag, bubble wrap, absorbent pad. If picked up, boxes will cost $4 each. If shipped, FedEX ground will be used with a cost of $9 per box.
Multiple boxes may be ordered for multiple submissions. However, CWD boxes with more than 2 formalin jars in each box will not be shipped. This is due to the complexity of billing for varying item numbers and attempting to keep the return box IATA compliant. These will be a single use item and not be returned to the submitter after use.
Credit card payment may be used to pay for boxes. That will require the owner or submitter to create a temporary account number with TVMDL.
