A major vehicular collision occurred at approximately 8 am, Saturday, Oct. 3, five miles south of Bandera on Highway 16 at Privilege Creek Road, according to a trooper with the Texas Department of Public Safety. One fatality was reported. Although details are sketchy, apparently the driver of a 2016 Ford Escape heading south on 16 crossed into the northbound lane and hit a 2002 Chevy Suburban head-on. Precinct 3 Justice of the Peace Eino Zapata pronounced the operator of the southbound vehicle, Richard Mortenson, 67, of Medina, dead at the scene. The driver of the Suburban, Bobby Gray, 53, of Lakehills, was airlifted to University Hospital in San Antonio with serious injuries. Deputies with the Bandera County Sheriff's Department assisted at the scene with traffic control. DPS troopers continue to investigate the accident. Additionally, on Tuesday, Oct. 6, a Bandera County resident was killed in a three-vehicle crash on Highway 46 in Kendall County. However, details of that accident were not available by press time.
