Flag Is Up Productions' presentation of "The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds," Paul Zindel's 1964 Pulitzer Prize-winning play, opens at 7:30 pm, Friday, Oct. 2, in the Hanszen Fine Art Building at Schreiner University.
Performances are for one weekend only, with a second show at 7:30 pm Saturday, and a matinee at 2 pm Sunday. Admission is free, but donations, which help fund FIU shows, are appreciated.
"Marigolds" is the story of Tillie, a shy girl fascinated by atomic science, and her mother Beatrice, who has been warped by a hard, sad life into a bitter and abusive single parent. Written in a time when both nuclear science and single-parent households were relatively new concepts, Zindel's play is a meditation on what happens when something fragile and small, like a young girl or a flower, encounters something dangerous, like a radioactive isotope - or a parent struggling with issues of abandonment and loss.
"Marigolds" is directed by stage director and theatre instructor Jeff Cunningham.
