The Utopia Lions Club once again showed their support of community youth by presenting scholarships to three Utopia ISD seniors in the amount of $2000 each for continued education. Utopia Lions Club President Rod Chalmers presented the scholarships on Saturday, May 30, at the Utopia Schools Gymnasium during the Utopia ISD graduation ceremony.
The three recipients are: Krista McDonald, daughter of Chris and Ellen McDonald, who will attend the University of Texas at San Antonio, to pursue a major in Archaeology; Lane Riggs, daughter of Bill and Sylvia Riggs, who will attend Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, to pursue a double major in English and Psychology; and Andrea Ruiz, daughter of Johnny and Esmeralda Ruiz, who will attend Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, to pursue a major in Applied Science.
These three young women exhibit the very essence of what Lions Club is all about - initiative, responsibility, dependability, and service.
Scholarship Chairman Marilyn Chalmers stated, "Krista, Lane, and Andrea have set an excellent example for students in Utopia ISD to follow, and are deserving recipients of these scholarships.
"Utopia Lions Club has pledged to help our young people continue their education. This is one of the challenges our community faces, and it's a need our club continues to address. We are also extraordinarily grateful for the support and contributions we have received from members of the Sabinal Canyon community and beyond. You are helping us make a difference," said Chalmers.
