Governor Abbott signs 'Kari's Law'

Governor Greg Abbott on Friday, May 15, signed Senate Bill 788 - aka "Kari's Law" - which will now require direct dialing of 9-1-1 from business and multi-phone lines across the state. Kari Hunt Dunn's parents, Hank and DaLonna Hunt, and daughter, Brianna Dunn, joined Abbott at the signing ceremony. "There's a lesson virtually every parent teaches their child - if you face an emergency, call 9-1-1," Abbott said. "I am signing Kari's Law to ensure that during an emergency, any child or adult who dials 9-1-1 will connect with emergency personnel." Kari's Law was named for Dunn, who was stabbed to death in 2013 by her estranged husband while 9-year-old Brianna tried repeatedly to connect with 9-1-1 on a hotel phone. The girl did not realize she had to punch 9 for an outside line to complete the emergency call. The new law requires direct 9-1-1 access for hotel and other business phones.
