Bicyclist killed on Highway 16 North

A bicyclist was struck by a vehicle and killed Sunday, May 10, on Highway 16 North, according to Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper Eric Morgan. The fatality occurred at 10:34 am.
The cyclist has been identified as Ed Allbritton, 73, of Pipe Creek. According to Morgan, Allbritton was riding a recumbent bicycle within a designated area along the roadway when Shawn Jones, 38, of Medina struck him from behind, killing him instantly. Jones was driving a 2005 Cadillac.
The wreck took place at a top of a hill across from Camp Sionito. Morgan said Jones was looking in his rearview mirror when he struck Allbritton. Cell phone use did not contribute to the accident. "Mr. Jones said he was en route to Hondo to pick up his cell where he had left it," Morgan said.
The trooper continued, "Our accident report form has been revised with regard to cell phone use. We now are required to note if cell phone use is suspected to have been involved in an accident whether by texting, as a telephone or 'other'."
Morgan also indicated the incident is still under investigation and he plans to take it before the grand jury at a later date.
