College students warned to beware of mover scams

By Carolyn B. Edwards BCC Staff Writer

The latest scam of the week involves college students moving out to "save the world" following graduation, or simply moving for the summer.
The Texas Department of Motor Vehicles has issued a warning concerning the use of unlicensed movers. A number of cases have occurred in which unlicensed movers simply drove off with the student's property, or they held the property "hostage," demanding additional payment to release the items.
By law, Texas movers must be licensed with the DMV. Go to their website at http://txdmv.gov/motorists/consumer-protection/dont-make-a-move to find instructions on how to check their database to make sure your mover is licensed.
The site also has helpful advice on choosing a licensed mover, reviewing proposals and contracts, and having the right kind of insurance to protect your belongings during the move.
