Representatives from LCRA, BEC, Bandera Middle School and the Bandera ISD celebrate a grant to complete the school's water conservation project.

Bandera Middle School will be able to complete a water conservation project thanks to a $3,745 community development grant from the Lower Colorado River Authority and Bandera Electric Cooperative.
The grant will enable the school to finish installing a water reclamation system to collect water from the school's roof and store it in three 2,500-gallon containers. The system includes a pump and an ultraviolet filter. The funding covers the cost of PVC pipes and fittings used in the distribution system as well as electrical wiring connecting the pump to a power source. The school plans to irrigate its grounds with the reclaimed water.
"Our water conservation initiative began in 2011 with a focus on recycling water and xeriscaping, and I am very excited about this grant because our campus will finally be able to complete the water catchment project," said Bandera Middle School Principal Donald Tosh.
"Students in our environmental science classes are ready to use the rainwater runoff and condensation from our air conditioning systems to sustain our plants and trees. In such arid times as we are experiencing now, it is vital to teach our students to conserve, reuse and recycle wherever we can."
The water reclamation system will reduce the amount of groundwater the school uses, saving water and money. The system also will benefit the more than 500 students at Bandera Middle School by raising water conservation awareness.
The community grant is one of a number of grants recently awarded through LCRA's Community Development Partnership Program. The program provides economic development and community assistance grants to cities, counties, volunteer fire departments, regional development councils and other nonprofit organizations in LCRA's electric and water service areas. The program is part of LCRA's effort to give back to the communities it serves. Bandera Electric Cooperative is one of LCRA's wholesale electric customers and a partner in the grant program.
Applications for the next round of grants are due July 31. More information is available at www.lcra.org/cdpp.
