Scam of the week

By Carolyn B. Edwards BCC Staff Writer

Law enforcement agencies are getting plenty of calls recently regarding the latest income tax scam. Apparently, the way this one works is that the caller clones a local police department number and calls the "mark" or victim and advises that person they owe back taxes.
The caller then demands the victim make an immediate payment via the purchase of a Green Dot or Money Gram and provide the card information over the phone.
This is a scam.
Law enforcement and the IRS do not make such demands and will never require a payment be made over the phone.
If you receive such a phone call simply hang up the phone.
Since we have passed the April 15 income tax payment deadline, this scam may fade away. But there will no doubt be variations on the theme, so beware!
Don't ever provide credit card or bank account information over the phone unless you initiated the call.
