On Monday, March 2, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Bandera County was given the Program Excellence Award from the Texas Alliance of Boys & Girls Clubs for the implementation of Sylvan ACT IT programs provided in after school programs.
Last August, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Bandera County was notified that they were one of 35 Boys & Girls Club organizations to receive grant funding and a formal partnership with Sylvan Learning Centers in Texas.
The unique part of this grant and partnership opportunity is that the Bandera County club is the only organization in Texas that takes part in this grant opportunity that does not have a Sylvan Learning Center in their service area.
"Our club is thankful to the Sylvan Learning Center of Northwest San Antonio and owner Susan Fairbairn for thinking outside of the box to service our youth in Bandera County!" said Executive Director Greg Parker.
Another great chance for collaboration that this grant has provided is the opportunity to hire local Bandera ISD teachers as tutors for the program. When Sylvan Learning Center of Northwest San Antonio hired local teachers for this program, they provided additional job opportunities for the community - a great benefit for our residents.
This school year, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Bandera County will serve around 60 different youth for tutoring programs in math, reading and writing. These youth are tested and their progress is monitored to show success of the program.
"While we are working hard to provide opportunities for youth in Bandera County, we are thankful to partners like the Texas Alliance of Boys & Girls Clubs, Sylvan Learning Centers and Bandera ISD for working together to provide a great Club experience for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Bandera County," Parker said.
