Free health seminars set at Helping Hand

By Carolyn B. Edwards BCC Staff Writer

A series of monthly health seminars on a range of health issues will begin on Wednesday, Feb. 25, at 10:30 am in the conference room at Helping Hand in Bandera. The first session will be about diabetes. There will be no charge for any of the informative classes.
The seminars will be led by Ruth M. Rojo, ND, PhD Nutrition. Dr. Rojo is a traditional naturopath. She offers consulting and counseling in health issues and nutrition for clients in Bandera, Boerne, Hondo, Kerrville and San Antonio.
"Everyone is invited to attend these classes," said Rojo. The February session will be about diabetes. Subsequent sessions will cover heart disease, cancer, menopause, pregnancy and more.
Rojo uses a group discussion format, and urges attendees to come with a pen and notepad and plenty of questions.
"A lot of times patients are given a diagnosis but don't receive a lot of information," said Rojo. "Denial is often the first response to a diagnosis and that keeps a patient from developing a plan of action." Rojo says she likes to keep explanations in layman's terms.
"My background and training are in nutrition and naturopathy," she said. She is nationally board certified and has practiced for 20 years. "I retired to Bandera, but I find that now I'm ready to go back to work," she said.
Naturopaths do not diagnose, they don't dispense drugs, nor do they do surgery, Rojo explained. "We study all kinds of health responses to disease and help patients develop a healthy lifestyle plan for their particular issues," she said. Naturopaths encourage the use of natural substances and practices, so "we have to know how these natural things work with any prescriptions the patient already takes."
The health sessions will be an hour to an hour and a half long.
