Veterans issued 'Choice Cards'

Congressman Lamar Smith

By US Rep. Lamar Smith
Special to the Courier

By observing Veterans Day in November, we honored all veterans, past and present, who have served our country and defended our nation's freedoms. America is a stronger country today because of the sacrifices made by our veterans. The debt that we owe our brave servicemen and women can never fully be repaid.
Our commitment to our men and women in uniform should be more than a symbolic gesture. We need to work to help veterans obtain the benefits and services they deserve. The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) recently released an Information Packet containing several updates regarding veterans' benefits.
In its enactment of the Veterans Access, Choice and Accountability Act, the VA has begun issuing Choice Cards as part of the Veterans Choice Card program. This program allows veterans to elect to receive care outside of VA facilities when they qualify based on the distance of their residence from a VA care facility or when wait times for VA health care exceed 30 days. Our servicemen and women deserve the best health care available, regardless of whether that service is offered by the VA or by other non-VA medical facilities.
For more information regarding the Choice Card program, or to verify eligibility, call 1-866-606-8198.
Our commitment to our veterans is not something to remember only one day a year, but a commitment, which lasts a lifetime. The 21st Congressional District is home to many veterans, current members of the military and their families.
