App makes it easier for Texans

Special to The Courier

A new Your Texas Benefits app allows people to use their cell phones to send paycheck stubs and other documents to the state when applying for SNAP food benefits, Medicaid, the Children's Health Insurance Program or TANF cash assistance.
"This is another way we're making it more convenient for people to find out if they can get state benefits," said Texas Health and Human Services Executive Commissioner Kyle Janek. "One of the most common reasons people visit our offices is to drop off documents, and we want to make that process easier for people who work, have children or limited transportation."
With the app, users can take photos of documents the state needs to find out if they qualify for benefits and submit the information to the state. This allows someone to send copies of paycheck stubs, Social Security cards and other items the state uses to verify that someone meets income and citizenship requirements for state programs.
People getting state benefits can also use the app to see basic information about their case, including key dates and their case status. The state plans to add additional features to the app in a series of releases over the next year.
The Your Texas Benefits app is available in the iOS App Store for iPhones and the Google Play Store for Android users.
Texans can use the www.YourTexasBenefits.com website to apply for SNAP, Medicaid, CHIP or TANF.
