The historic Doane House - now known as Hilltop Hacienda - was approximately 80 percent destroyed when fire raged through the residence. Owners Michael and Mary Goodale were inside the home when the fire began at approximately 3:45 pm on Monday, Nov. 17. Luckily, no injuries occurred. Built in the 1940s, the former bed and breakfast is located off Highway 16 South. According to Bandera County Fire Marshal John Stith, a preliminary investigation turned up "some concerns about the use of extension cords." Volunteer fire departments responding to the blaze included Medina Lake, Castle Lake, Pipe Creek, Bandera, Lakeshore and Tarpley. An article and more images of the fire that destroyed a Bandera County treasure will be published in a future edition of the Courier.
