Sylvan Learning contracts with Boys & Girls Club

By Carolyn B. Edwards BCC Staff Writer

The Bandera County Boys & Girls Club has formed an agreement with Sylvan Learning Centers to provide tutoring to a select group of students who are members of the club.
"We're excited about this opportunity," said B&G Club Director Greg Parker. "We work hard promoting academic goals for our members and this new partnership will help us with that."
The club receives some state funding to help accomplish its academic goals through a statewide alliance, a funding mechanism for education projects.
Sylvan Learning Centers, a well-known national tutoring company has programs for math, reading, writing and test preparation. They tout their program as a personal tutoring approach that "blends amazing teachers with technology."
This fall, the local club will have three groups of 10, one at each of the club's annexes, that will qualify for the program. Students will undergo testing to be selected for the program. As a start-up, only math will be included for this first semester.
Only 37 B&G Club sites in Texas were selected to participate in the Sylvan program and "we're the only club selected that does not have a Sylvan center in our service area," said Parker.
Children who are selected to participate in the program will have access to the full math tutoring program offered by Sylvan at absolutely no charge, Parker explained. "This is the equivalent of a $1,500 program," he added.
Club members who are not selected to participate in the program will not be left out, however. They will have access to Sylvan's on-line materials and learning games in reading and math while at the club.
As an added perk for the local economy, Parker said that Sylvan had encouraged the club to reach out to local teachers to apply for jobs as tutors for the program.
Parker expects the partnership with Sylvan Learning Centers to change the community's view of the Boys & Girls Club. "We're truly not just baby sitting. It's a real shift in the community's perception of what we do."
The Bandera club has three annexes, the Teen Center at 715 Maple Street and one each at Alkek Elementary and Hill Country Elementary. For more information about joining the club, call 830-796-8109.
