Grant to help veterans and families with home modifications

Special to the Courier

The Alamo Area Development Corporation (AADC) recently received a Housing 4 Texas Heroes Program grant and is gearing up to help some of the 255,000 Veterans and their families in the 13-county Alamo region with essential home modifications related to their medical needs and ability to age in place.
Last month, an official recognition ceremony was held at AACOG to receive a check for $500,000 from the Texas Veterans Commission. Texas State Representative Jose Menendez, officials from the Texas Veterans Commission including Fund for Veterans' Assistance Director Kathy Wood and H4TXH Program Coordinator Brent Flournoy, city of Natalia Mayor Ruby Vera, city of Karnes City Manager Don Tymrak, AADC Board Chairman Tom Weaver, and AACOG Interim Executive Director Tim Treviño and staff were in attendance. Veteran Noe Garcia, attended with his wife, Vicky, daughter, Rita, and gave a testimonial about the modifications made to his home by the H4TXH program in a prior grant year.
This funding cycle continues through June 2016 and will provide essential home modifications to address medically-specific conditions, for veterans, their families, and unremarried widows in the 13-county Alamo region. The goal of the program is to serve low-income Texas veterans and their families by providing home modifications that would not normally be available from other funding sources.
"Over the years we have noticed that, although many needs are being met by federally funded programs, there are times that specific needs of individuals in our communities, combined with the age and condition of housing stock in the Alamo region, create situations where extra work needs to be done to make the homes safe environments where families can age in place. By braiding state funding and the generosity of all Texans who contribute through DPS License donations and Lotto tickets, we can make a difference, and give a little back to those who have given so much," said René Chadick, Housing4TexasHeroes and Weatherization Assistance Program Manager at AACOG/AADC.
In 2012 and 2013, AADC also received grants for the same program, and was successful in helping over 48 Veterans and their Families, exceeding their goals each year by over 122 percent. They hope to do the same with their current program which aims to support over 30 families with essential home modifications throughout the Alamo region.
