City residents are now making their summer getaway plans. Whatever the length of their trips - a three-day weekend or long vacation - I urge everyone to remember to look out for themselves and their neighbors.
Here are some tips residents can use for safeguarding their homes while they're away:
• Have good locks on all doors and windows and use them.
• Make sure any broken windows, doors or window locks are repaired.
• Never leave a house key hidden outside the home.
• Stop all deliveries, or arrange for a neighbor to pick up mail, newspapers and packages.
• Plug in timers to ensure lights, a radio or television is turned on and off at appropriate times.
• Turn the telephone ringer down low.
• Don't announce an absence on answering machine messages.
• Close and lock garage doors and windows
• Secure storage sheds attic
• Make a list and photograph serial numbers on all valuables.
• Consider taking valuables to a bank safe deposit box.
These simple precautions will ensure a safe and restful summer for everyone.
