What is TRIAD?

Contributed

TRIAD seeks to build partnerships between senior citizens and law enforcement to share information on how seniors can avoid becoming victims of crime and enhance the safety and quality of their lives. The name is not an acronym; the term refers to the three founding organizations of Triad: AARP, the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP), and the National Sheriffs' Association (NSA).
There is no cost involved in having a TRIAD in your community. The council is comprised of 10 to 20 representatives from community agencies that work with, or for, the elderly.
A few of the TRIAD programs available for seniors include:
• Cell Phones For Seniors
TRIAD collects used cell phones in the community which are sent to the 911 Cell Phone Bank for processing. In return, they build a bank of free emergency phones for seniors in need. If you need a phone, contact the Silver Sage Community Center at 830-796-4969.
Residents and businesses are encouraged to drop off used cell phones at Bandera County Sheriff's Office at 3360 State Hwy 173 N - Attention: Rural Addressing, or at the Silver Sage, 803 Buck Creek Drive, Bandera, TX 78003.
• Smoke Detector Program
TRIAD offers senior citizens smoke detectors for their residence. Seniors are encouraged to contact their local fire department or the Bandera County Fire Marshal's office at 830-460-8183. A representative will come out to install smoke detectors in the home at no cost to the recipient.
• Posting Your Address
In the case of an emergency, it's so important that first responders can locate a residence. TRIAD offers seniors (65 and older, for this offer) addressing signs. If necessary, TRIAD will hang them up for the individual.
Contact the 9-1-1 Rural Addressing office at 830-796-8343 for more information.
The programs highlighted above are just some of what your local TRIAD offers. There are many more programs and activities available for seniors. If you would like more information on how to take advantage of these programs or be involved with TRIAD, please call 830-796-8343.
