Personnel changes at Arthur Nagel Community Clinic

Arthur Nagel Community Clinic President Lon Yaeger recently announced personnel changes at Bandera's free heath care clinic that he indicated would have a positive effect on clinical operations.
"The recent changes will also help raise the funds needed to fulfill the clinic's mission into the future of Bandera County and its residents," Yaeger said.
K. Irene Stone, who has served as the clinic's executive director since 2010, has been appointed director of development, replacing retired grant writer Dan Wise.
"Irene has done a wonderful job as executive director," Yaeger said. "She has always wanted to work in the areas of grant writing and fundraising. Her knowledge of clinical operations, coupled with her community involvement and her relationship with many of our donors and foundations, make Irene the ideal candidate to step into this position."
Bruce Hanks, owner and president of Star Light Bookkeeping Services and Quick Draw Payroll, Inc., will serve as the clinic's new executive director. In addition to serving as current treasurer for the clinic, he has been a member of the board of directors and executive committee member for five years.
"Bruce has spent countless hours working with Irene and has a deep understanding of the way the clinic works - especially from a financial perspective and what it takes to run an efficient business," Yaeger said.
"The board is very fortunate to have assembled such a strong team at the Arthur Nagel Clinic - especially since we are only weeks away from the grand opening of the clinic expansion," he continued. "We will almost double in size, allowing us to serve even more Bandera County residents unable to afford medical care on their own."
As her biggest challenge, Stone views accruing sufficient donations to cover operating costs, enabling the organization to remain viable and productive. "I can raise funds easier for specific programs that help people directly, but it is difficult to get donors to give so that you can keep the lights on or buy office or medical supplies," she said.
According to Stone, donations are becoming more restrictive and must be spent as per the giver's specific requests - regardless of true needs.
"Plus, we are held accountable by our auditors. We must literally track every penny for a restrictive gift and provide an evaluation report on outcomes," she explained, adding, "So when we request a donation, we have to know exactly where we want it to go, how we are going to track it and how we will report back about its success."
Of course, this challenge applies not only to the Arthur Nagel Community Clinic, but also to all 501(c)(3) nonprofits. "A gift from a donor is a beautiful thing and something for which we are very appreciative, but it is icing on the cake when the donor says, 'Spend it where you need it most'," Stone noted.
The Arthur Nagel Community Clinic provides free and low-cost healthcare services to eligible Bandera County residents without access to medical care in Bandera County due to limited income and lack of health insurance. The clinic provides mental, dental and primary and preventive healthcare services.
Arthur Nagel, a resident of Kerrville, made the first gift to Bandera County Helping Hand for construction of a clinic that would provide free healthcare services to Bandera County's eligible population.
His donation of $150,000 was used to construct the building's shell in June 2006. Within a year, Helping Hand had raised $748,800 to complete the clinic, which opened its doors in May 2008. Patient visits have grown from 64 to 245 a month, and the clinic board has budgeted for 283 patient visits per month in 2014.
With an eye to the future, a $450,000 building expansion includes a new kitchen for healthy eating classes and an education room for support groups and workshops, as well as expanded examination rooms and offices for support staff.
