A cross-country, whistle-stop train and motor coach tour in support of school choice will make a stop in San Antonio, organizers announced recently.
Hosted by National School Choice Week, the tour - which will feature 14 "whistle-stop" events from Newark to San Francisco - will provide students, parents, educators and community leaders with an opportunity to celebrate effective education options, while calling for even greater school choice in Texas and across the country.
The San Antonio event, the tenth event on the tour, will take place at 9 am, Monday, Jan. 27, at Historic Sunset Station. Attendance is free but an RSVP is requested by visiting www.schoolchoicetrain.com.
Local event planning partners include: American Federation for Children, Americans for Prosperity, Association of American Educators, Democrats for Education Reform, Education Reform Now, Foundation for Excellence in Education, GreatSchools.org, The Justice Foundation, PublicSchoolOptions.org, and Texas Charter Schools Association.
Event speakers will be announced in the coming weeks.
Now in its fourth year, National School Choice Week, Jan. 26 to Feb. 1, in 2014, shines a spotlight on the need for all types of education options - from traditional public schools to public charter schools, magnet schools, private schools, online learning, and homeschooling. National School Choice Week is an independent, nonpolitical and nonpartisan public awareness effort.
"Just as whistle-stop tours were used in the past to promote issues of transformational national importance, our tour is designed to galvanize public support for school choice and educational opportunity in local communities across the country," said Andrew Campanella, president of National School Choice Week.
"We look forward to bringing our tour to San Antonio and working with people across Texas and our nation to celebrate school choice where it exists - and demand it where it does not."
