Time to visit Lost Maples SNA

Photos by James Henry Frazar

The time to go to Lost Maples State Natural Area in Vanderpool for the fall color is now. The annual color change of the Big-Tooth Maple trees has started. The usual date for the change is Veterans' Day, but apparently the warm fall and lack of rain has slowed and delayed the process. However, don't delay, because if a norther blows through with high winds, all the color might blow off the trees. The best time to go is during the week, when there are fewer people. If you go on the weekends, go early in the day. As these photos show, color at Lost Maples comes not only from the maples and Spanish oaks, but from wildflowers and berries. Bring your native plant and bird ID books! Visit: www.tpwd.state.tx.us/state-parks/lost-maples/foliage-reports for the latest leaf color report. The website is updated each week.
