The 11th annual Bandera Honors Veterans event will take place on Saturday, Nov. 9. The festivities will begin at 10 am with the veterans' displays of military items on the courthouse lawn. The ceremony is scheduled for 11 am to 11:45 am.
This year's guest speaker will be retired Army Brigadier General James Bisson from Harper. A highly decorated Vietnam veteran, he also served in the Texas Army National Guard. A parade will begin at noon after the ceremony, and a free barbecue lunch will be served to all veterans and their families immediately following the parade.
Bandera Honors Veterans event chairman and 26-year veteran of the US Marine Corps Marshall Considine said, "Each year we have veterans from World War II through Afghanistan attend. This event continues to grow each year, and we ask the community to join us at the courthouse and along the parade route to show their support for the veterans of Bandera County who have given so much to this country."
Those who have not signed up to enter the parade, should contact Considine at 803-796-4185. Additionally, to reserve a space on the courthouse lawn for the Family Veterans Displays, contact Pam Baker at 830-796-5207.
"Mark your calendars for Nov. 9 to honor our community's veterans and their families," Considine said. "George Washington certainly understood the need for remembrance when he said, 'The willingness with which our young people are likely to serve in any war, no matter how justified, shall be directly proportional to how they perceive veterans of early wars were treated and appreciated by our nation'."
