Briscoe Western Art Museum grand opening
Special to the Courier
The Briscoe Western Art Museum, located on the historic River Walk in San Antonio, Texas, will open its doors to the public on Saturday, Oct. 26.
The Grand Opening Weekend will take place from 11 am until 5 pm, Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 26 and 27. It will feature a festival of activities, food, and music on the Briscoe Campus. Admission to the public during Grand Opening weekend will be free.
"The Briscoe Museum will introduce a new era of the arts for San Antonio and beyond, as the museum continues to build upon the region's extensive creative and cultural offerings," said Debbie Montford, chairman of the museum's board of directors. "The grand opening in October is the realization of a strong vision by the board to create a lasting institution where the art and culture of the West come to life in the West's most iconic city."
The weekend festivities will spread across the Briscoe Campus, featuring charros, trick ropers, a working chuck wagon, artist demonstrations, a hands-on children's area, Western themed-food, live entertainment and more.
Inside the Museum, tours of the thematic galleries will take place throughout the weekend. "Our vision is to create galleries that are evocative of the time and place in which the West was populated by diverse groups of people seeking land, fortune, work, and very often a new beginning," said Dr. Steven M. Karr, Executive Director. "We hope that by focusing on themes such as 'work,' 'opportunity,' or 'movement,' the visitor will better understand how these concepts influenced and continue to influence our cultures, landscapes, and lives, throughout the West and even the nation."
The Briscoe Western Art Museum occupies over one and one-quarter acres of land comprising two buildings and an expansive courtyard and sculpture garden. The main museum building, at nearly 38,000 square feet, occupies the historic and architecturally significant former San Antonio Central Library built in 1930.
The Briscoe Museum is located at 210 W. Market Street in downtown San Antonio.
