Scam of week - new Medicare cards

By Carolyn B. Edwards BCC Staff Writer

Beware! Beware! Bandera County seems to be the hot spot for scammers during this summer season.
Following last week's story on an alleged US Customs Agent contacting a local resident about getting her help to release a package held by Customs in Miami, the Courier got a call from a reader.
"My phone rang and it was marked private on the caller ID," reported the potential victim. "The guy had an accent, had my full name and address. He said he needed additional information in order to send me my new Medicare card."
When the local man said he didn't need a new card, the caller hung up. When our reader attempted to redial the number it came up marked "blocked call."
As always, it's vitally important not to give your personal information such as bank account numbers, charge card account numbers or social security numbers to anyone you do not know - no matter how convincing they may sound, or how sad a story they have to tell!
