Bulldogs fall to Canyon Lake in district matchup

By Brady Keane BCC Contributor

Last Friday, April 5, the Bulldogs varsity baseball squad played host to the Canyon Lake Hawks and battled throughout the game before losing 7-1. After holding a lead or tie through five innings, the Bulldogs collapsed in the sixth, allowing six Canyon Lake runs. With the loss, the Bulldogs fell to 2-17 on the season and 0-9 in district play.

Bandera started the game off strong as leadoff hitter Calvin Bankston reached base on a walk, and stole second base to get into scoring position. Junior Jonathan Stoufflet sent a hard hit ball into left field to score Bankston and give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead after the first inning.

Junior Caleb Beauchamp took the mound for the Bulldogs, allowing a single run in the first inning before holding the Hawks scoreless for the next four innings. The Bulldogs faced trouble in the fifth inning with the game still tied 1-1, and Canyon Lake loaded the bases. A Canyon Lake hitter sent a hard hit line drive right back to Beauchamp, but a quick reaction resulted in a run saving double play to get the Bulldogs out of the inning unharmed.

After the first inning, the Bulldogs offense struggled to score. Juniors Ish Macneil, Cody Brown, Stoufflet, and freshman Dallas Backer were the only Bulldogs able to make it on base after Bankston scored early in the first.

In the sixth inning, the Canyon Lake bats came alive as the Hawks exploded for six runs. Sophomore Ty Neff came in to finish the game off on the mound and was able to hold the Hawks scoreless for the remainder of the sixth and seventh innings, however the Bulldogs were unable to add to their run total.
