Fire destroys Wharton's Dock home

By Carolyn B. Edwards BCC Staff Writer

The Riley family lost their home in a fire of undetermined causes in the early morning hours of Tuesday, March 26.

According to County Fire Marshal John Stith, the fire was first spotted around 3:15 Tuesday morning at a house at 8032 Wharton's Dock Road.

"The homeowner called in the fire," said Stith. "When firefighters from the Lakeshore VFD arrived on the scene they found the back of the structure fully involved."

The blaze apparently started in an addition to the mobile home. It ignited a large cedar tree which subsequently spread the fire to the main structure.

Three people in the house at the time were able to safely escape.

The probable cause of the fire was a heat lamp on some baby chickens that may have ignited flammable materials, said Stith.

Bandera VFD assisted in fighting the fire.
