MLPS presents Buoy Awards

By Carolyn B. Edwards BCC Staff Writer

The Medina Lake Preservation Society hosted their fourth annual Buoy Awards banquet at the Medina Lake RV Resort on the historic Leibold-Grothues Ranch in Lakehills Saturday, Nov. 17.
Buoy Awards went to Dorothy and Patrick Ahr, Yolanda Goodloe, Risé Martin, Yvonne Wood and Harold Zinsmeister. The awards recognize members of the Medina Lake community for their exceptional volunteer efforts and community service. These people, who make positive contributions to keep the community "afloat," are naturally considered "buoys."
Guest speaker for the event was Matt Synatschk from the Texas State Historical Commission.
Major sponsor of the event was Hi Energy Realty of Lakehills.
The MLPS is a non-profit organization founded in 1987. They were deeply involved in the planning and execution of the 2012 Medina Lake Centennial celebration, acting as the official sponsor. MLPS has also planned focus projects for 2013 involving the Spettel Riverside House and the Medina Dam Workers Memorial Park.
In March of this year, the Spettel Riverside House was named one of nine of Texas' most endangered historic places. Members of the MLPS have set a goal of preserving the structure which played a key role in the history of the lake area and the early cattle drives.
