Bandera Honors Veterans distinguished speaker

Retired Lt. Col. Stephen Harris of the US Marine Corps will serve as distinguished guest speaker for the 2012 Bandera Honors Vets celebration, beginning at 9 am, Saturday, Nov. 10. In 1992, Harris oversaw the operational planning and deployment of an air traffic control detachment to Mogadishu, Somalia. In 1994, he was deployed to Saudi Arabia as a senior representative in the I MMEF Maritime Prepositioning Force Survey, Liaison and Reconnaissance Party in support of Operation Vigilant Warrior. This United States military operation took place from October to December 1994 in response to two divisions of Iraqi Republican Guard troops moving toward the Kuwaiti border. The next year, Harris attended the Air Force Command and Staff College at Maxwell Air Force Base. In 2000, he assumed command of Marine Air Control Squadron. Harris' personal decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal with one gold Star, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with one Gold Star and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal. Harris and his wife have four children. One of the couple's daughters is a captain in the United States Air Force.
