Boots & Barkley American Beef Bully Sticks recalled

By Judith Pannebaker BCC Editor

Kasel Associated Industries of Denver, Colorado has voluntarily recalled its six-count, five-inch Boots & Barkley American Beef Bully Sticks product because of possible Salmonella contamination.

According to a report, pets that consume these products can become ill. Additionally, humans are at risk for salmonella poisoning if hands and counters are not washed thoroughly after coming in contact with contaminated pet products.

Healthy people infected with Salmonella should monitor themselves for some, or all, of the following symptoms - nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. Rarely, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments such as arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation and urinary tract symptoms. Consumers exhibiting these symptoms after being in contact with this pet product, should contact their healthcare providers.

Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and experience diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Additionally, infected, but otherwise healthy, pets can be salmonella carriers and potentially infect other animals or humans.

Pets that have consumed the recalled product and exhibit any of the symptoms of salmonella poisoning should be taken to a veterinarian.

Target retail stores distributed the recalled American Beef Bully Sticks nationwide from April through September. The product comes in a clear plastic bag containing six bully sticks marked with bar code number 647263899189.

Kasel Industries is recalling all lot numbers after the following lot codes tested positive through analysis by the scientists with the State of Colorado Department of Agriculture:

• BESTBY20APR2014DEN
• BESTBY01JUN2014DEN
• BESTBY23JUN2014DEN
• BESTBY23SEP2014DEN

During a routine sampling, scientists with the State of Colorado Department of Agriculture discovered the presence of Salmonella bacteria in the finished products. However, to date, no illnesses have been reported in animals or humans in connection with this problem.

The company ceased manufacturing and distributing the beef bully sticks while FDA and company officials attempt to determine the source of the contamination. No other products made by Kasel

Associated Industries are included in the recall.

Consumers who have purchased the six-count five-inch packages of Boots & Barkley American Beef Bully Sticks are urged to return the products to the place of purchase for a full refund.

Consumers with questions may contact Kasel Associated Industries at 1-800-218-4417 from 7am to 5 pm MDT, Monday through Friday.
