Sorry 'bout that

By Judith Pannebaker BCC Editor

In last week's article in the Bandera County Courier titled, "Smith resigns, leaving Merritt 'top cop'," Daniel "Dan" Butts, Republican candidate for Bandera County Sheriff in the Nov. 6 General Election, was inadvertently described as having retired as a sergeant from the Texas Department of Transportation.

I hope, by now, everyone in Bandera County is aware that longtime law enforcement officer Butts retired from the Texas Department of Public Safety. Chalk the error up to an inadvertent momentary lapse - or what is more commonly known in the vernacular as a "brain fart."

However, misidentifying Dan wouldn't be my most egregious reporting error - oh, no, not by a long shot.

Several years ago, as a staff writer for the Hill Country View in Boerne, I covered Kendall County Commissioners Court, which included Commissioner Gene Miertschin. One day, while running spell check, I mistakenly hit "Change" instead of "Ignore" when the program landed on the word "Miertschin." Thereafter, he became known throughout the county as - wait for it! - "Commissioner Maraschino."

I can only hope nothing untoward occurs the next time I type the phrase "Department of Public Safety."
