GE announced dishwasher recall, says Appliance Doctor

By Carolyn B. Edwards BCC Staff Writer

According to local appliance repair company The Appliance Doctor, General Electric has recently announced a voluntary recall of several of its Eterna-series branded plastic tub dishwashers.

The washers have front controls and were manufactured from March 2006 through July 2006, and November 2006 through April 2008.

"This voluntary recall involves an electrical failure in the dishwasher's heating element that can pose a potential fire hazard," said the announcement.

"As part of the corrective action, GE will be replacing the heating element on the associated units at no charge to customers, or offering customers a rebate toward the purchase of a new dishwasher," Appliance Doctor owner Brandon Nicholson said.

Model brands covered in this recall include GE and GE Profile, GE Adora, and GE Eterna. Model numbers begin with GLC4, GLD4, GLD5, GLD6, GSD61, GSD62, GSD63, GSD66, GSD67, GSD69, GLDL, PDW7, PDWF7, EDW4, EDW5, EDW6, GHD4, GHD5, GHD6, GHDA4, and GHDA6.

Serial numbers of the affected machines begin with FL, GL, HL, LL, ML, VL, ZL, AM, DM, FM, GM, HM, LM, MM, RM, SM, TM, VM, ZM, AR, DR, FR, and GR. Also included is the Hotpoint model number HLD4.

The model and serial numbers can be found on a metallic plate located on the left tub wall visible when the door is opened.

"There will be no charge to the customer for labor or for the heating element repair kit," said Nicholson.
"Owners of this brand of dishwasher should check their model number. If they have one of these dishwashers they should contact us or GE immediately because their washer is a potential fire hazard," said Nicholson.

Nicholson started the Appliance Doctor in Bandera in 2009. He has over 20 years of experience in appliance repair.

"We service all brands of small appliances including refrigerators, under-the-counter ice machines, dishwashers, washers and dryers as well as microwaves," said Nicholson.

Those brands include GE, LG, Whirlpool, Kenmore,
Frigidaire, Maytag, Jen-air, Hotpoint and many others.

Nicholson services the appliances at the customer's residence. His coverage area includes Bandera, Medina, Kerrville, Fredericksburg, Lakehills, Mico and Hondo and Utopia, Tarpley and Vanderpool.

Service call prices vary with location.

Nicholson and his wife, Brandi, are originally from the Houston/Beaumont area and "enjoy living in the beautiful Texas Hill Country."

To contact GE, call the Technical Assist Group at 502-452-4700 or at 866-918-8760 between 8 am and 5 pm ET, Monday through Friday; or call the Appliance Doctor at 830-285-9545.

Consumers should not return the recalled dishwashers to the retailer where they purchased them since the retailers are not prepared to take the units back.
