Horse racing, fair & PBR returns to Gillespie County

Live pari-mutuel horse racing returns to the Gillespie County Fair Grounds in Fredericksburg on Saturday and Sunday, August 11 and 12, along with three livestock shows in the show barn.

Horse Racing

The gates open at 11 am for the races with a 1 pm post time on both days. Admission to the grounds is $5 for adults, $1 for children ages six to 12 years and free for children under six. Box seats are available for $9 each.

Quarter horses and thoroughbreds will again be featured in the live pari-mutuel races at the five-eighths mile oval at the Class III track that weekend. Highlighting the live racing program on Saturday will be trials for the 350-yard GCFA Maiden Futurity and the GCFA Maiden Classic. The finals for both of those races will be run on August 25.

The 330-yard GCFA 79 and Under Allowance will be run on Sunday. The top 10 qualifiers for the race, which has a purse of $41,600, were determined during the Texas Fest Race Meet. Trials will also take place Sunday for the 350-yard Gillespie County Fair Futurity with the finals run on Sunday, August 26.

The 2012 racing season will conclude with two days of racing on Saturday and Sunday, August 25 and 26, as part of the 124th Gillespie County Fair. Sponsored by the Gillespie County Fair and Festivals Association, slated for August 23-26, the weekend is part of the 2012 summer season at the Gillespie County Fair Grounds.

Livestock Judging

Additionally, three livestock competitions are planned over the weekend in the Show Barn at the Gillespie County Fair Grounds.

The Meat Goat Futurity, sanctioned by the Junior Meat Goat Show Circuit, Inc., takes place on Saturday, August 11. Showmanship starts at 9:15 am followed by the show at 10 am. On Sunday, the Gillespie County Race Day Classic Steer Show, sanctioned by the Texas Junior Livestock Association, starts at 9 am with judging in the Lamb Futurity beginning at 10 am.

The livestock shows are being held in conjunction with the upcoming 124th Gillespie County Fair.

124th Gillespie County Fair

Rounding out the 2012 summer schedule at the Gillespie County Fair Grounds will be the 124th Gillespie County Fair Thursday through Sunday, August 23-26.

Activities include a carnival and midway, outdoor concerts and dancing, parade, queen's contest, live pari-mutuel horse racing, agricultural and home products displays and more.

Additionally, livestock judging continues during the fair.

Featured entertainers include Jake Hooker and The Outsiders on Friday, August 24. On Saturday, August 25, Jody Nix and The Texas Cowboys will open for Aaron Watson. Admission to the grounds that night after 6 pm will be $10 for adults, $5 for children ages six to 12 years and free for children under six. Both dances are scheduled for the outdoor pavilion from 8:30 pm to 12:30 am.

Pari-mutuel horse races that Saturday and Sunday will conclude the 2012 racing season.

Professional Bull Riding

An evening of professional bull riding, beginning at 7:30 pm, will be offered at the Gillespie County Fair Grounds on Saturday, Sept. 15, during the third annual Fredericksburg PBR.

The Fredericksburg PBR is sponsored by the Gillespie County Fair and Festivals Association, Inc.

Live music and a dance featuring the music of Jeff Griffith will follow the bull riding.

Advance general admission tickets are $18 while general admission at the gate is $20. Box seats are $40 and premium seats are $50.
