BEWARE of utility bill payment scam

Remember the old adage: If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is?

The Bandera Electric Cooperative advises that utility customers in several states have fallen victim to a new scam. The victims were told that President Obama would help pay their energy bills under a special federal program if they provide personal information, such as a bank routing number or their social security number.

"While we have not had any reports of BEC members being targeted, Better Business Bureaus in several states have issued consumer warnings," said a BEC spokesman.

Bandera Electric Cooperative encourages members to be vigilant about protecting their personal information. "If you feel uncomfortable giving information to someone who identifies themselves as an employee of the cooperative, please hang up and call our offices at 1-866-226-3372 to verify the identity of the caller," added the spokesman.
