Unique trail ride to benefit Brighter Days

On Saturday, May 5, a unique benefit trail ride will kick-off to raise much-needed funds for the Brighter Days Horse Refuge, located off Highway 16 South.

Ride sponsors Leanne Beauxbeannes and Jeanne B of Desert Hearts Cowgirl Club are inviting area dude and guest ranches to participate by opening their trails or providing some of western meals.

After a breakfast sponsored by the Flying L Guest Ranch, the trail ride will head out at 9 am from the scenic 5,000-acre Hill Country State Natural Area, located 10 miles west of Bandera on Ranch Road 1077.

The ride will meander to neighboring dude ranches, including Rancho Cortez, with a stop at the Silver Spur Ranch for lunch. After the midday meal, the ride will continue through the Running R Guest Ranch and back to the HCSNA at Chapa's Group Camp for Kelly Scott's Chuck Wagon supper, sponsored by Jeanne Parker of Frontier Town in Bandera. Donations of desserts are appreciated.

Auctions will be held at the completion of the ride and before supper. Donations are still being accepted for the silent and live auctions slated for Saturday night.

Auction items can be dropped off at Bunkhouse Leather, 1207 Cedar Street, or at the HCSNA Park Headquarters or brought to the trail ride.

Russell and Marci Tiner of Cross T Ranch will provide rental horses and a wrangler for the ride.

Camping at the park at Chapas will be included the night before and the night after the ride; however, rigs must depart by noon on Sunday.

Some electric hook-ups will be available for campers at an added fee.

A donation of $50 covers the trail ride registration fee.

Registration will be by email or phone call.

Those who pre-registration by Tuesday, May 1, will be entered in a drawing for a free ticket.

Checks for the registration donation can be made payable to "Brighter Days Horse Refuge" and brought or mailed to 10600 Bandera Creek Road, Bandera 78003.

For an additional fee, limited wagon spaces will be available for non-riders.

"This should be a real fun way to help the Brighter Days Horse Refuge care for their 98 horses in a time of great need," said a spokesman for the event.
