Troopers busy with March wrecks

By Carolyn B. Edwards BCC Staff Writer

March has not only brought its traditional winds, it has brought a number of traffic accidents, some of them resulting in serious injuries.

The Bandera County Sheriff's Office dispatch reported three major accidents and three minor accidents for the week of March 12 through March 19.

On Saturday, March 10, Katrina Peterson of Rhone, Texas, was seriously injured when she drove her Chrysler PT Cruiser off the road on FM 1283 at 5:25 pm.

According to Department of Public Safety reports, Peterson was cited for traveling at an unsafe speed for the conditions of the roadway.

Peterson was traveling south on 1283 when she failed to negotiate a curve and lost control due to a wet road.

The vehicle went off the road, hit a sign, went through a ditch, and went airborne across a private driveway before coming to rest.

The accident occurred about a half-mile south of Heisler Road. Peterson was transported to Boerne Methodist.

On Sunday, March 11, Elvin Stanley, 55, of Bandera, was air-lifted to University Hospital in San Antonio after an accident on Highway 16 near Phil's Road in Pipe Creek.

Stanley was traveling north on 16 on his Yamaha motorcycle when witnesses say he apparently tried to pass on the right. One witness said he appeared to have struck one of the many orange safety barrels marking the construction zone in that area, hit some gravel and lost control.

The accident happened at 7 pm.

Stanley was not wearing a helmet.

On Tuesday, March 13, a Chevrolet pickup driven by Jaylun Melius, 32, of Bandera, was rear-ended when Melius attempted to turn onto Oak Street from Main in Bandera. Autumn Eyre, 55, of Medina, driving a Honda Accord, following behind Melius, failed to stop in time and ran into Melius' vehicle.

Melius was transported to Sid Peterson Regional in Kerrville.

Neither a passenger in Melius' truck nor Eyre were transported.

On Saturday, March 17, an accident occurred at the intersection of FM 1283 and English Crossing Road at 1:20 pm. A Toyota Prius driven by a 16-year-old male had stopped at the stop sign before pulling onto 1283 into the path of a Nissan pickup driven by 37-year-old Tiffany Pratt.

Pratt was unable to avoid running into the Prius.

The teen was transported to Methodist Hospital with serious injuries. Pratt refused treatment at the scene.
