Bandera youth shines at 2010 HC junior livestock show

Bandera County youth fared well at the first Ag Mechanics Show held during the 2010 Hill Country District Junior Livestock Show in Kerrville, according to Rick Boles, ag mechanics chairman.
Cody Mayfield of Bandera FFA took the Grand Champion Ag Mechanics Project with his lamb walker he built and exhibited. For his effort, he received welding equipment donated by Matheson Tri-Gas Company of Kerrville.
Mayfield also placed as Champion Individual Showman and received a cutting torch donated by American Filler Metals of Houston. As Reserve Champion Individual Showman, Chase Babbit, also of Bandera FFA, received a welding helmet, air impact wrench and hose from Tractor Supply Company of Kerrville.
Mayfield’s lamb walker also placed first in Class 402, while Babbit’s tower deer blind came in second.
Bandera FFA’s Dusty Drouin placed first in the Trailer Division with a 5-foot by 8-foot trailer she built in the Ag Shop.
In Class 500, Home Convenience Division - Wood Projects, Garrett Collins’ king-sized bed made from Cypress wood was awarded first place.
Additionally, Bandera FFA Ag Mechanics team members received the Sweepstakes Award, which was given to the team with the highest points overall in the competition.
“We have had nothing but positive comments from participants, adult sponsors and stock show directors, as well as business sponsors, and spectators,” Boles said.
Judging for the Ag Mechanics Show took place from 8 am until 3 pm, Wednesday Jan. 20. Awards were announced later that day. Show judges were Dr. Ted Ford from Tarleton State University and Wade Mayfield, a construction superintendent with Joris Construction Company of San Antonio. Both men commented favorably on the quality of the projects exhibited at the show, according to show officials.
The Ag Mechanics Project Show was sponsored by Overall Sponsor Back 40 Trailers, Matheson Tri-Gas of Kerrville , Sowesco Welding Supply, Houston; MG Building Materials; American Filler Metals of Houston; Center Point Farm Ranch; Tractor Supply Company; and Five Star Rental. Other sponsors included TJ Moore Lumber Co.,Hill Country Pump of Mountain Home, Jim and Loraine Haynie and AJ and Libby Knaggs.
