Community leaders, elected officials, farmers, ranchers and others interested in learning about the Alamo Resource Conservation and Development (RC&D) Area Inc. are invited to the annual meeting, scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 8, at the Texas Agricultural Education and Heritage Center’s “Big Red Barn” in Seguin.
Registration is 9 am until 10 am, with a business meeting at 9:30 am. This meeting is open to the public. Personnel with soil and water conservation districts within the Alamo Area Council of Governments will offer an overview of the RC&D program will be given. A presentation by personnel with the Texas Agricultural Heritage Center will take place at 11:15 am with a tour of the grounds scheduled for after lunch. Lunch will be $5 a plate.
The Big Red Barn is located at 390 Cordova Road, off Highway 123 north of Seguin.
“The Alamo RC&D is a unique program led by local volunteer councils who help people care for and protect their natural resources to improve the local economy, environment and living standards in the 10-county region we serve,” said Karen Opiela, chairman of the Alamo RC&D. “A lot of times our work is behind the scenes in helping the local communities by obtaining grants, hosting events or even getting out ourselves to help the communities do a clean up.”
The Alamo RC&D Area is one of 22 RC&D Areas in Texas serving Atascosa, Bandera, Bexar, Comal, Frio, Guadalupe, Kendall, Kerr, Medina and Wilson counties in Central and South Texas.
The Alamo RC&D Council volunteers include local, civic, appointed and elected officials. The nonprofit entity works in partnership with the USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) through a federal coordinator.
“Because Alamo RC&D is locally organized, sponsored and led, the program provides an ideal way for residents to join together to decide what is best for their community,” said Bertha Venegas, coordinator for Alamo RC&D. “Our council identifies and addresses unmet needs in the local communities of the 10 counties we serve.”
