Whether you want to try something new or push your skills to the next level, there is a good chance you can find the right workshop opportunity at the Hill Country Arts Foundation. The month of February will be packed with a variety of prospects.

• Cheryl Alexander will teach “Ceramic Pit Firing” on Feb. 6, 18 and 20. In this workshop, clay workers will learn to translate their pottery skills into sculpting skills. The workshops include carving, internal armatures, linking parts into a whole and creating sculpture with a good foundation that will “survive the fire.” The workshops cost $200 for HCAF members $200 and $220 for non-members.

• An “Open Studio Intensive” with Jerry Seagle will be held Feb. 10, 11 and Feb. 12 to allow intermediate to advanced students to push their artwork to the next level. Students may work in the water media of their choice; however, mixed media, collage and drawing techniques are also encouraged. Cost is $200 for HCAF members and $220 for non-members.

• DK. “Debra” Richardson will teach “Accuracy & Depth Perception” on Feb 16, 17 and 18. This three-day workshop will emphasize accuracy and the illusion of depth for a more powerful still life painting. The workshop will not focus on a specific medium. Students may use the medium of their choice. Cost is $165 for HCAF members $165 and $180 for non-members.

• “Let’s Paint the Trees,” a workshop teaching landscapes in oil with instructor Mary Zirkel will be held Feb. 24, 25 and 26. This three-day class for all levels will be in oil or acrylic. The class will emphasize studying the structure, color and texture of various trees. Since the workshop is not a “paint-a-long,” each participants will be encouraged to select a photograph or other resource to use during the class. Cost is $150 for HCAF members and $165 for non-members.

• “Ancestral Masking” with Anne Curtis and Derek Weaver will take place on Feb. 27 and 28. In this workshop, participants will explore the classically simple technique of face casting. Students will also learn numerous ways of creating finished pieces through two molds made from their features in step-by-step instruction. Cost is $125 for HCAF members and $135 for non-members. Material fee is $20.

HCAF has year-round workshops for adults and summer programs for children. For a complete listing or more information on these workshops and instructors, visit www.hcaf.com or call 830-367-5120.
