Students’ special ‘investigations’ save families $$$

A group of young detectives has been working on a new case. Students at Pipe Creek Christian School are hunting in their homes for clues that can lead to high utility bills and energy waste.
Fourth grade students in John Hulse’s and sixth grade students in Ruth Hudson’s science classes are learning how bad energy habits, such as keeping lights on when not needed, taking long showers or setting the thermostat too low on hot summer days, can waste natural resources and add unnecessary costs to of their families’ monthly electric bills.
Personnel with Bandera Electric Cooperative (BEC) sponsors the PowerHouse™ energy investigation program, which teaches middle school students and their families about the effects of energy use on natural resources and the environment.
“PowerHouse was a fun way to learn about saving electricity and water. The Jeopardy game was fun as a review for our quiz,” said student Abby Busby.
PowerHouse gives students a hands-on understanding of energy consumption by allowing them to become energy “detectives.” Using a walk-through guide, students investigate and record their households’ energy-using features. They receive a personalized report showing patterns of energy use, some energy-saving tips and a summary of their impact on the environment and various natural resources. The program also offers practical solutions that students can share with their families.
“BEC was proud to sponsor students at Pipe Creek Christian for the PowerHouse energy investigation program. Students realize how much money it costs to have lights, air conditioning and water heaters on in their household,” said Stephen Williams, BEC member services-system safety advisor. “They find out that by using compact fluorescent lighting and changing thermostats to energy efficient settings, they can help save on their families’ utility bills.”
