HCAF announces March workshops

The Hill Country Arts Foundation will offer quality workshops for students of all levels, from the novice to the professional throughout 2009.

March workshops in March include using a potter’s wheel and painting in oils or acrylic. To receive a catalog of 2009 workshops, call the HCAF gallery office at 830-367-5120.

Master potter Mark Jackson introduces beginning pottery making from 6 am to 9 pm, on Monday evenings throughout the month, beginning on March 2. This workshop offers an extensive hands-on approach with an emphasis on wheel throwing.

Students will learn basic wheel skills such as centering, opening, pulling, shaping trimming and finishing, as well as preparation for glazing. Students will make variations on the basic cylinder, including mugs, vases and bowls. Tuition is $140.

Mary Zirkel will teach the art of painting feathered friends in “Birds of a Different Feather,” from 9 am to 3 pm, March 4, 5 and 6.
This three-day class is geared for all levels. Students may use oil or acrylic; however, Zirkel will work in and demonstrate in oil. Students will learn to paint a hen, rooster, turkey or bird of choice on canvas. Although Zirkel will provide many photos, she invites students to bring their own. Tuition is $150 for HCAF members and $165 for non-members.

Barbara Jackson, a teaching representative with Golden Acrylics, will introduce “What’s New in Fluid Acrylics” during a one-day workshop from 10 am to 4:30 pm, Saturday, March 7.

Although fluid acrylics may be used as alternatives to watercolors, their application possibilities surpass traditional watercolor techniques.

During the workshop, students will learn how “Fluid Acrylics” can be poured and puddled, dripped and dragged onto paper, canvas or any other substrate to achieve unique effects. Several prepared substrates will be provided for workshop participants.

During the workshop the use of “OPEN Acrylics” will also be explored. This new concept in acrylic paints stays wet longer than other acrylics and resists skinning on the palette during long painting sessions. Golden Paints will provide a “Fluid Acrylics” and “OPEN Acrylics” sampler kit to each workshop participant.

Tuition is $120 for HCAF members and $125 for non-members.
Charlotte Curry will teach students how to draw and paint different types of clouds in her “To Paint in the Clouds” workshop, set from 9 am to 3 pm, March 17, 18 and 19.

Experimentation with different colors in the sky, sunsets, stormy weather and big puffy clouds will be covered. Weather permitting, a part of the workshop will be conducted outside. Tuition is $175 for HCAF members and $195 for non-members.

Learn pouring techniques with Krispen Spencer in “Luminous Paintings,” schedulted from 10 am until 3 pm, March 23 and 24. The workshop will cover creating luminous paintings by pouring fluid acrylics onto a horizontal canvas.

Spencer will teach this experimental workshop to anyone “willing to come with a ‘beginner’s mind’.” Tuition is $150.
For more information or to register for the workshops, contact 830-367-5120 or visualarts@hcaf.com.

HCAF is located at 120 Point Theatre Road South in Ingram, just five miles west of Kerrville off Highway 39.
