Family dog's death blamed on chicken treats

By Penny Eims Dog News Examiner

Westlake, Ohio - It is one thing to read an FDA warning about the danger of chicken treats made in China, it is quite another to hear a firsthand recount from traumatized dog owners who believe that they have lost their own companion from one of these "treats."

An Ohio family is mourning the loss of a dog who died from kidney failure which they believe can be attributed to the consumption of Waggin' Train Jerky Tenders.

They are waiting and hoping that their second dog will survive.

According to MyFox8.com, the Thaxton family lost their 10-year-old pug "Chaunsey" to kidney failure in November.

Two short weeks later, the family's 5-month-old puppy "Penny" became ill as well. A trip to the veterinarian confirmed that the puppy's kidneys were also failing - just like Chaunsey's had.

The only thing that Chaunsey and Penny had in common were Waggin' Train Jerkey treats.

Now, the family wants everyone to be aware of the potential risks of providing these treats to their dogs.

The Thaxton's have filed a claim against Waggin' Train, but in the meantime, they hope that their warning to other pet owners could save a life.

(Examiner note: Though researchers have been unable to determine why these treats are causing problems, there has been an increase in the number of consumer complaints - many with stories similar to the Thaxtons.

As a dog owner, it is advisable to err on the side of caution when purchasing treats for your companion.)
