May launch dates set for Rockets 2012

SystemsGo, the Fredericksburg-based nonprofit organization that created the educational rocket program now used in about 50 high schools in Texas, has announced launch dates for 2012.

For the first time in five years of bringing students together for the launch, SystemsGo will conduct launches at two sites - one near Fredericksburg; the other near Houston. Exact locations and directions will be announced later.

In Fredericksburg, a pre-flight dinner will take place, Wednesday, May 2, with launches slated for Thursday, May 3 through Sunday, May 6.

In Houston, the pre-flight dinner will be Friday, May 11, with rockets launched from Saturday, May 12 through Sunday, May 13. In the past, students have launched about 70 large rockets they have designed and built in their high school classrooms over the course of the school year. The launches are free and open to the public. Visitors can watch students assemble and launch, along with participating in educational activities, including model rocket building for young students.

The program promotes engineering studies and research, develops work force skills, and encourages students to enter academic and career paths in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields that lead to careers in the engineering industries.

SystemsGo is endorsed by NASA and certified by The Space Foundation.
