Schreiner University's annual Expanding Your Horizons conference for girls in the sixth through eighth grades will be 9 am to 4 pm, Saturday, Nov. 19, on the University campus.

Check-in will be 9 am to 9:45 am in the second-floor ballroom of the Floyd & Kathleen Cailloux Campus Activity Center. Cost of participation in this year's EYH is $20, which includes lunch, lab supplies, flash drive and a T-shirt.

The deadline to register is Wednesday, Nov. 9. Need-based scholarships are available to cover registration costs.

Co-sponsored by Schreiner, the American Association of University Women and Time Warner Cable Company, EYH is designed to give girls in middle school an opportunity to explore mathematics and sciences as areas of interest for their high school and college studies, and as a possible career option. This year's theme is "Connect to the Future."

The conference includes classes and hands-on labs exploring such topics as computer-generated art, making a rocket, unraveling the causes of illnesses and the chemistry involved in beauty products, as well as CSI and astronomy labs. There also will be a close look at what goes into a chemical reaction with the always-popular lab, Gummy Bears Go Boom.

"Expanding Your Horizons literally transforms the girls who attend," said Dr. Diana Comuzzie, professor of biology and dean of the Robert B.
Trull School of Sciences and Mathematics at Schreiner." The light in their eyes comes on and they see a future for themselves that they didn't see before. It is tremendously rewarding to be part of that."

There will be free discussion sessions for parents in the morning covering areas of parental interest, such as recommended high school courses for moving on to a college degree in science or mathematics and financing a college education.

For more information and to register online, visit the Expanding Your Horizons website at www.schreiner.edu/eyh. Students may also register through their schools.
